Installing the hardware associated with Vantage involves eight basic tasks. To prepare for the installation first decide on a location for the Vantage workstation and for the terminal concentrators.
Note: The ST-2001/ST-2008 SCSI terminal concentrator/servers have been discontinued and are no longer available. These instructions can be used for other SCSI terminal servers. Please refer to Central Data for information on the EtherLite terminal servers.
Maps are helpful to identify the resources to be connected and to specify the terminal concentrators and ports to which the resources will be connected. Installation tasks are as follows:
1. Place workstation, power it up, perform setup to assign its name and IP address then determine an address for the terminal servers.
2. Perform network setup for TCP/IP terminal servers.
3. Assign addresses for servers and concentrators.
4. Place servers and concentrators, verify their addresses, place and connect the FASlink cable and apply power.
5. Shutdown the workstation, attach servers, power workstation and install Vantage software.
6. Place 50-foot cables between resources and terminal concentrators and connect cable to terminal concentrators.
7. Install Resource and Console hoods, cable hardwire console and test.
8. Connect 50-foot cables to resource hoods.
Each task is described in detail below:
1. Place workstation, power it up, perform setup to assign its name and IP address then determine an address for the terminal servers.
Place the workstation in its desired location and power it up. An Instant Ignition system will allow you to assign the workstation a name (host name), IP address, time zone and root password as part of the initial setup. If the workstation is not Instant Ignition, use the program /etc/set_parms from a root login to set these parameters. Obtain a host name and IP address from your network administrator to complete the setup. Once the setup is complete, run the program '/etc/ioscan' to determine an available SCSI addresses for the SCSI Terminal Server(s).
2. Perform network setup for TCP/IP terminal servers.
Perform the network setup tasks in the Central Data Definition, Emulex Definition or Lantronix Definition sections of this document if TCP/IP terminal servers will be used.
3. Assign addresses for servers and concentrators.
The ST-2001 scsiTerminal Server is a SCSI device and is assigned an address as determined by the ioscan program. The SCSI address is set by using a small blade screwdriver to turn the arrow dial on the rear panel of the ST-2001 to the desired address. A SCSI-2 to SCSI-2 cable is provided with each unit to make the physical connection to the SPU. If the ST-2001 is the last physical device on the SCSI bus it must be terminated, either internally or externally. Resistor packs are provided with each terminal server to enable internal termination. The device can be terminated externally with a standard SCSI-2 terminator.
The ST-2008 Terminal Concentrators are FASlink devices and are addressed differently. The first ST-2008 device in the daisy chain is assigned FASlink address 0, the second address 1, etc. The FASlink address is set by using a small blade screwdriver to turn the arrow dial on the rear panel of the ST-2008 to the desired address. The last physical device in the chain must be terminated by moving the last unit button on the rear panel toward the words "Last Unit". The ST-2001 and ST-2008's are daisy-chained together using the FL-100 FASlink cables provided with the Vantage product.
4. Place servers and concentrators, verify their addresses, place and connect the FASlink cable and apply power.
The ST-2001 server must be located within 1 meter of the workstation. The ST-2008 concentrators must be placed within 50 feet of the resources to which they will be connected. The last physical ST-2008 unit can be up to 1500 feet from the workstation.
Verify the SCSI and FASlink addresses assigned in the previous step, place and connect the FASlink cabling between the ST-2001 and the ST-2008's in a daisy-chain (remember to terminate the last unit) and apply power to the servers and concentrators.
5. Shutdown the workstation, attach servers, re-power workstation and install the Vantage software.
Shutdown the workstation as per the instructions in Shutdown of the Vantage Workstation and attach the SCSI terminal server to the workstation using the SCSI-2 to SCSI-2 cable. The server should be connected only after the workstation has been completely powered off.
Power the workstation up by applying power first to the peripherals then the SPU. When the workstation is back up install the Vantage software. See Installing/Updating Vantage Software for detailed instructions. The software installation will install driver code for the Central Data/Digi terminal servers and will then require that the workstation be shutdown, power cycled and rebooted.
NOTE: When cycling power on the Central Data/Digi hardware it is critical that power be removed at the outlet rather than at the back of the unit. Unpredictable results can occur if these units are not power cycled properly.
When the workstation boots you should see the following lines in the I/O configuration section of the boot messages: (This information is also available by running the program /etc/dmesg from a root login.)
Digi International EtherLite(R) Driver
These lines verify that the Central Data/Digi driver code was installed and that the ST-2001 scsiTerminal Server was identified on the SCSI bus. If you do not see these lines, check the installation log file and correct any errors, check the physical connection of the ST-2001 and shutdown and power cycle the workstation and peripherals again.
6. Place cables between resources and terminal concentrators and connect cable to terminal concentrators. Refer to Catwalk Version 3.0 for more information.
The next step is to place and label the cables that will make the connection from the resources' console ports to the terminal concentrator. The 50-foot cable provided in the CW-2000 connector kit is used for this purpose. Leave one end of the cable near the resource and connect the other end to the resources' assigned ports on the terminal concentrator.
7. Connect Resource and Console hoods, cable hardwire console and test.
Connect a Resource hood to the console port of the resource then connect a Console hood to the console terminal. Connect the 10-foot cable provided in the CW-2000 connector kit to the Terminal side of the resource hood and to the Terminal side of the Console hood. Test the hardwire console by pressing Return on the console terminal. You should see a system prompt. If you do not see a system prompt it is possibly a 2/3 flip problem. Try switching pins 2 and 3 on the resource hood and test again. If you still do not get a system prompt call Vantage Technical Support.
8. Connect 50-foot cables to Resource hoods.
The last step in the hardware installation is to connect the 50-foot cable to the Catwalk side of the Resource hood. You are now ready to begin defining resources.
