Installing/Updating Vantage Software

The Vantage software and associated files are distributed on CD-ROM. To install the Vantage software, or update to a newer version, perform the following steps:
Create any 'User Defined Scripts'
The Vantage installation allows for the execution of user defined scripts either before or after the installation process. If you are interested in having a special function performed during the installation process contact ASP Technologies for details.
Load the Vantage media into the CD-ROM drive.
Gracefully stop all Vantage programs and prepare for logout.
Logout of the workstation only after stopping all Vantage processes. See Shutdown of the Vantage Workstation for details.
Login as root with no windows on CDE or simply login as root on Linux.
CDE - Position the pointer in an open area of the background, click and hold a button on the mouse, drag the pointer to the words "Log out..." and release the mouse button. Click the Options button on the CDE login screen then click "No Windows". Press Return as soon as you see the words "CDE will resume shortly after you log out" to get the login: prompt. Now log in as root.
KDE (Linux) - It is not necessary to exit out of the window manager, but you may not be logged into KDE as vanmgr because the installation will be updating the vanmgr window configuration. Once you are in KDE, as anyone but vanmgr, open a terminal window and log in as root with 'su -'.
cd /
Changes the present working directory to the root directory.
rm -fr V_install_[old_version] (e.g., 3.00 on legacy systems)
Removes the old V_install directory and files if they exist.
Mount the cdrom drive
Makes the CD-ROM drive available to be read.
Example: on Linux execute - mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom
cd /cdrom
Changes the present working directory to the install directory on the CD-ROM.
./v_install | tee > /install.log
Executes the Vantage installation script, which sets up the standard Vantage users, directories and working environment.
Remove lestif libraries and restore openmotif libraries (Linux only)
If lesstif libraries are found they will be removed and the openmotif libraries will be restored. If openmotif libraries are found they will be removed and replaced. Respond Yes to remove and replace libraries.
Install/Update/Remove
You will be given a choice to do an Install, Update or a Remove. You must type the entire word to respond. Choose Install if this is a first-time installation or Update if you are upgrading from a previous version. Remove will delete all of the files from the Vantage subdirectories and remove the Vantage users.
WARNING: Choosing Install or Remove will delete all defined resources, groups and events.
The Install process will first look for the /etc/vantage.rc file. This file determines where the various directories of the Vantage software will be installed. If the vantage.rc file does not exist the product will be installed in /users/vantage. If you want to install in directories other that this respond Yes to the question Do you wish to create a /etc/vantage.rc.
Old Version
The installation will determine if Vantage was previously installed and remove the old version. Respond Yes to continue. This does not apply to an Update.
Vantage Directories
The next step will prompt for the directories in which you want to install Vantage. It is recommended that you accept the default directories. To choose the defaults simply press Return after the enter choice: prompts. If you want to install Vantage in directories other than the defaults enter the path following the prompts. The installation will display your choices and ask if you want to use the vantage.rc file. If you respond No the installation will prompt for the information again. Responding Yes will create the vantage.rc file and continue the installation. This does not apply to a Update.
Continue Installation?
This gives you one last chance to decide not to do the installation. Answer Yes to continue installation.
Enable Multiplex Menu?
Respond Yes to enable the multiplex menu for shared consoles.
Customize Resource Definition Default Options?
Respond Yes to customize the resource default options. This step is for legacy Vantage installations and will enable you to modify each resource's definition with new value. Responding Yes to this question will enable you to customize Resource Defaults for existing resources that would normally be done through the Resource Default Options dialog. This step saves time by modifying all configured resources without having to use the dialog.
Remove Existing Vantage Users?
If Vantage users and groups are found you will be asked to remove them. This does not apply to an Update. It only applies when you are overwriting an existing Vantage installation.
Default
Reply Yes if you wish to install the default Vantage window manager environment. A No response will skip this step and continue the installation using whatever environment is installed on the Vantage host. This only applies to an Update.
Install Vantage Help System?
Respond Yes to install the Vantage Help system. If you choose No, and the installation finds the Vantage help system, you will be asked if you want to remove it.
Install Vantage Sound Vocabulary?
Respond Yes to install the Vantage sound vocabulary. If you choose No, and the installation finds a Vantage sound vocabulary, you will be asked if you want to remove it. As of Version 4.00 Voice event is not supported on Linux, so you will want to respond No so save disk space.
Secure Vantage Dialogs?
Respond Yes to add or retain passwords on the Vantage Dialogs. Default passwords are vanoper for the Launch/Status Manager and vanadmin for the Resource, Group and System dialogs.
Execute User Defined Script?
User created scripts can be executed as part of the installation. Respond Yes to execute the user defined script.
Install Central Data/Digi Drivers?
Vantage can communicate with resources via serial ports on Central Data/Digi terminal servers. The use of these devices requires the installation of driver code written by Central Data/Digi Corporation. The Central Data/Digi driver code is installed as part of the Vantage software installation.
Respond Yes to install the currently supported Central Data/Digi Drivers and build a new kernel. A No response ends the installation. Skip the next step and continue the installation procedures.
Do you have an EtherLite unit to add now?
Respond Yes to add a new terminal server, No to skip. You may add a terminal server at any time by running /usr/els/Install.
passwd vanmgr
Set the password for the Vantage user. This step is not necessary on an Update, only on an Install. This step is required for an Install on Linux, optional on other systems.
Reboot the workstation (if needed)
If the install script has directed you to reboot the system then it should be done now. On HPUX the "/sbin/reboot -h" command will shutdown the workstation. When you see the words "You may now cycle power" it is necessary to power cycle all devices on the workstation. Turn power off to the SPU first then power down all peripherals. Power up should be in the reverse order; peripherals are powered up first then the SPU.
NOTE: When cycling power on the Central Data/Digi hardware it is critical that power be removed at the outlet rather than at the back of the unit. Unpredictable results can occur if these units are not power-cycled properly.
The following line should appear in the I/O section of the boot messages if Central Data/Digi drivers were installed:
Digi International EtherLite(R) Driver
Login to the window manager as vanmgr (Or exit the root login if a shutdown was not required.)
If this was an initial install the user vanmgr will not be password protected. You will be prompted for a password before being allowed to login for the first time. After login you should see the Vantage workspace front panel which retains most of the functionality while adding several Vantage specific convenience features. If this is a new install on CDE you will need to position the Vantage front panel then save your environment by clicking the Start Up icon in the Style Manager.
vanresource
This step is only applicable to CDE. Open a terminal window on the workstation and execute the script vanresource. This script changes some of the decorations in the CDE environment. Select Restart Workspace Manager from the Workspace Menu when the script prompts you to do so. This step in not applicable to Linux because Linux does not use CDE.
vpasswd
Default passwords were assigned if you chose to assign passwords to the Vantage dialogs. These passwords now will be required before anyone is allowed to use the dialogs. The default password for the Resource, Group and Event dialogs is vanadmin. The default password for the Launch/Status Manager dialog is vanoper. It is strongly recommended that these passwords be changed immediately in order to secure the use of the dialogs. Refer to Assigning Passwords to Vantage Dialogs for information on changing the passwords.
xhost +
To allow vantage dialogs to run on Linux the 'xhost +' command must be executed in a terminal window every time the window manager is started.
The first task to be done after an initial installation is to define resources. Refer to Configuring and Administering Vantage for instructions.
