The Vantage display includes the front panel and, optionally, an Icon Box. The Vantage front panel contains basic CDE functions as well as enabling access to specific Vantage functions. The Icon Box manages client icons.
The descriptions below are very brief. To get more detail about the CDE environment please refer to the CDE documentation that was shipped with the workstation. This section in not applicable to Linux because Linux does not use CDE.

The Vantage front panel contains a clock.

The datebook calendar is an appointment calendar where Vantage users can schedule appointments, pop-up reminders and communicate events. Please see the UNIX man pages to get more information on using the datebook. This feature is not available on all platforms.

Workspace Switches allow you change to another workspace. The padlock icon locks the workstation's display, The speaker icon starts an audio dialog and the EXIT icon starts the logout process on the Vantage workstation.

Style Manager control allows you to customize the appearance of the workstation. The Text Editor icon opens an editor. The Tool Box lets you run system level programs.

CDE Help, and Printer info. CDE Help gives general help on using CDE. Printer info shows the printer status on the workstation.

Electronic Mail, File Cabinet and Trash Can. Electronic mail is elm. The file cabinet opens a file manager for /home/vantage. The Trash Can is a receptacle for deleted files.
The terminal icon on the left opens an hpterm, the icon in the center opens an X term and the icon on the right opens an IBM3270 emulator.
In order to minimize clutter on the Vantage display, it may be desirable to put icons for clients running in each workspace into an Icon Box. Each workspace then has its own icon box that will contain an icon for each process running in that workspace. Client windows can be opened by double clicking their icon image or by choosing Restore from their file menu.
When clients are started their icon images are placed in the icon box. As more icons are added a scroll bar appears at the bottom of the window to enable scrolling to see other icons. The window can be maximized by clicking the large square button in the upper right corner of the window. To minimize the window, click the smaller of the two buttons in the upper right corner of the window. To restore the window to normal size either double click the icon image of the icon box or click the Box icon in the lower left corner of the front panel.

As icons are removed from the window the remaining icons can be "re-packed". To repack icons position the pointer anywhere on the window frame, click and hold the right mouse button, drag the pointer to the word "PackIcons" then release the button.
