Managing the Vantage Workspace

The Vantage workspace is managed by interacting with the workstation's display. The environment is typical of other "windows" type applications in the way that the user opens and closes windows, starts applications, etc.
Processes running on the workstation are displayed as icons, windows or dialogs. Each process displays its own menu depending upon its state (i.e., clicking an icon opens a menu with selections specific to an icon).
Menus are displayed by either clicking the word File or the Window Menu button that appear in the upper left corner of the window or by clicking and holding the right mouse button anywhere on the window frame. The examples below show some of the menus associated with processes that run on the Vantage workstation.
For more details about using menus please refer to the CDE User's Guide. Refer to Using Vantage Dialogs to learn about Vantage dialogs.
The workspace menu contains commands that help manage the Vantage workspace. To access the menu move the pointer into an open area of the workspace background, click and hold any button on the mouse, drag the pointer to a menu item then release the button to choose the item. An example of the menu and a brief explanation of each menu item follows.

Shuffle Up raises the window to the top of the stack of windows; Shuffle Down moves it down. Refresh clears and refreshes all windows on the display. Minimize/Restore Front Panel minimizes or restores the front panel. Restart Workspace Manager restarts the CDE environment. Log out starts the logout process.
WARNING: Log out should be selected only after all Vantage processes have been gracefully shut down. See Shutdown of the Vantage Workstation for more information.
If you choose to logout and Vantage processes are still running, a dialog box will be displayed. All processes will be gracefully shut down before the logout is executed.
The Window frames the application and contains controls that enable you to move it, make it larger or smaller or put it in other workspaces.

The minimize and maximize buttons are located in the upper right corner of the window. Clicking the smaller button minimizes the window turning it into an icon. Clicking the larger button once maximizes the window to its largest size. Clicking it again returns the window to its normal size.

The Window Menu button is located in the upper left corner of the window. Clicking this button opens the Window Menu shown in the next figure. If a window does not have a menu button click and hold the right mouse button anywhere on the window frame to display the menu.

Terminal window Menu selections are shown at right. Restore turns the icon into a window. Move enables moving the window to a different location on the display. Size interactively changes the size of the window. Minimize turns the window into an icon. Maximize enlarges the window to fill the entire display. Lower puts the window on the bottom of the stack of windows. Occupy Workspace displays the Occupy Workspace dialog to select the workspace in which the window should appear. Occupy All Workspaces displays the window in all workspaces. Unoccupy Workspace removes the window from the current workspace. Close closes the window.

The Occupy Workspace menu allows selection of the workspace in which the window or icon should appear. The workspace highlighted is the workspace in which the window is currently displayed. To deselect a workspace click the highlighted workspace name. Click All Workspaces to have the window displayed in all workspaces. Click OK when done making selections or Cancel to close the menu without making changes.

This is a console icon and its menu. The menu is opened by positioning the pointer either on the icon or anywhere on the window frame and clicking and holding the right mouse button. The menu selections are the same as the terminal window except that the console window does not have a Close. Console windows are closed by selecting Stop Console on the Launch/Status Manager dialog.
